  • Unit I. Introduction to Taxidermy (8 hours) 

    This unit will give an overview of what will be learned in the program as well as history, definition and description of taxidermy, a summary of those specimens most often mounted; the care and handling of specimens; the use of forms, tools and other materials; suppliers; provincial and federal standards and regulations; resource materials, text and associations. Students will be graded on their participation. 

  • Unit II. The Art of Horn Mounting (28 hours) 

    Students will learn how to mount different types of antlers from various members of the deer family. 

  • Unit III. The Art of Fish Mounting (40 hours) 

    The student will learn how to properly skin and to prepare and preserve skin; carve a body form, fit the skin to the body, paint, finish the mount. 

  • Unit IV. The Art of Game Heading Mounting (40 hours) 

    The student will learn how to inspect, measure and skin a game head; flesh, salt and tan; install eyes, antlers; prepare and fit the form, dry, paint and finish the mount. 

  • Unit V. The Art of Bird Mounting (36 Hours) 

    The student will learn how to skin and flesh the skin; clean, preserve for mounting; carve a body form, dry, paint and finish the mount.

  • Unit VI. Guide Training (16 Hours) 

    Students will be taught the proper techniques of how to handle hunters from in the field to the preparation of the meet. All aspects of the guide training will be covered with the student. Adult CPR/first aid training will be made available. 

  • Unit VII. The Art of Small Animal Mounting (32 Hours) 

    The student will learn how to prepare, measure and create a form; skin, flesh, wash and preserve the hide; fit the skin to the form; paint, comb and finish the mount.

  • Unit VII. The Art of Large Animal Mounting (48 Hours) 

    The student will learn how to prepare, measure and order a body form; skin, flesh, clean, and preserve the skin; mount, install eyes, set jaw and sand ridges; paint, comb and finish the mount.

  • Unit IX. Rug Making Demonstration (28 Hours) 

    The student will learn to prepare and measure; skin, flesh, salt and tan; stretch, tack, mark and trim the hide; attach felt, finish the mount. 

  • Unit X. Air Brush Painting (16 Hours)

  • Unit XI. Finishing Work (8 Hours) 

  • Unit XII. Operating a Taxidermy Business (4 Hours) 

  • TOTAL: 304 HOURS
